We are excited to wrap up another successful year for the Return-It School Program and unveil the outstanding winners of our 2023 Story Contest.

For the past 23 years, our program has been a beacon of environmental education, inspiring countless schools to champion recycling and its profound impact on our environment. Each year, schools from all corners of British Columbia pour their hearts and creativity into sharing their recycling success stories, vying for the coveted $5,000 prize. The contest aims to empower the leaders of tomorrow by providing an incentive for students to take their recycling initiatives to the next level.

Introducing the Return-It School's 2022 Contest Winners

It has been another successful year for the Return-It School Contest, which received many inspiring recycling success stories from B.C. elementary, middle and high school students. Since the program’s inception 22 years ago, hundreds of schools have taken part in the program by collecting refundable beverage containers. The contest aims to empower the leaders of tomorrow by providing an incentive for students to take their recycling initiatives to the next level.

The 2021/2022 school year was competitive, with many entries demonstrating how students from across the province are showing a commitment and passion for recycling. The Return-It School Contest reflects Return-It’s social purpose to foster a world where nothing is waste – creating a better future for people, communities and the planet through recycling, education and strategic partnerships.

Ladner Elementary School’s New Playground Fundraiser

Ladner Elementary is a winner of the 2020/21 Return-It School Contest!

Students & parents at Ladner Elementary School have been collecting refundable bottles & cans since the Summer of 2020 to help raise funds for the Playground Replacement Project. With the help of community donations, they have returned almost 90,000 containers through drive-through drop-off events and the school's Return-It Express account!

Anahim Lake Jr. Secondary’s community recycling initiative

Students at Anahim Lake Jr. Secondary School, located in the remote Cariboo region village of Anahim Lake, know how important a fundraiser can be. Attending a remote school of just 48 students means the cost of field trips can be sky-high, so they’ve been banding together to raise funds for annual school trips with bottle drives since 2014!

Anahim Lake bottle drives do more than just fund field trips, though – through their efforts, the students have visibly cleaned up their community by getting all of its residents on board with keeping recyclables off the streets.

Tsi Deldel Elementary School’s New Community Recycling System

Students at Tsi Deldel School were faced with a real challenge when they set out to promote recycling in their small community.  Until recently, the small First Nations community of Tsi Deldel in Tsilhqot'in territory, Central British Columbia had no recycling infrastructure.

“Before we started the recycling program, our community was often littered with containers,” said Moray Kennedy, a teacher at Tsi Deldel Elementary School. “Now, residents are starting to deliver their recyclables right to our collection sheds at the school.”
