How the Program Works

Past participants must re-register for 2016/2017.

How the program works:

There are now two levels of participation you can choose to be a Certified Return-It School (not part of the contest) or a Return-It School Contest Participant.

If you choose to be a Certified Return-It School (NOT part of the contest):

  1. Enroll on behalf of the school you represent – Enrollment is fast, easy and free to any registered elementary, middle or high school in British Columbia.
  2. When prompted choose to be a certified Return-It School.
  3. Receive access to the website and get your bins and other materials (if needed) shipped to the school.
  4. Contact your local Return-It Depot – they’ll help you set up an account and even pickup services (if available). www.return-it.ca/locations
  5. We'll send you a certificate for your school that lets people know you run a responsible recycling program.

What your school will receive as a Certified Return-It School:

  • Up to three recycling bins
  • Access to an online information package which includes access to Encorp's video, "The Container Adventures: The Rescue"
  • Access to a customized dashboard on Returnitschool.ca.
  • Informational e-brochures: one with general beverage container recycling information and a second with tips on how to have a successful bottle drive
  • Information about the authorized Return-It Depot nearest you through the Return-It Locations webpage.
  • Access to at school presentations and lots more fun stuff.
  • A custom Return-It School Certificate to display in your school.

Delivery of program materials will occur within three to four weeks of registration approval.


If you want to be take part in the Return-It School Contest:

  1. Review and accept the contest terms and conditions.
  2. Enroll on behalf of the school you represent – Enrollment is fast, easy and free to any registered elementary, middle or high school in British Columbia.
  3. When prompted choose to participate in the Contest.  Middle schools have the option of competing in the Elementary or High School Contests.
  4. Receive access to the website and get your bins and other materials (if needed) shipped to the school.
  5. Contact your local Return-It Depot – they’ll help you set up an account and even pickup services (if available). www.return-it.ca/locations
  6. Spread the word about the program with everyone at the school – get the students involved!! Plan bottle drives and other events to take your program to the next level. Use Facebook and Twitter – get social!

  7. Report the containers collected so your school is eligible to win the bonus prize money – but remember that your school keeps all the deposit refunds. This can add up quickly, last year some schools raised almost $10,000!

  8. Bask in the glory of helping keep BC beautiful by recycling and helping to raise money for your school!

What your school will receive as a Return-It School Contest Participant:
